Prominent maritime professionals, experts and educators came together in Piraeus to discuss gender equality, emerging opportunities and the future of women in the marine and maritime sector.
The ATALANTA Inclusivity Workshop, held successfully on 13 October 2026 at the Piraeus Marine Club in Greece, brought together distinguished speakers and participants from across the maritime ecosystem for an inspiring exchange of experiences, perspectives and ideas on advancing gender equality and inclusion in the sector.
The event attracted strong interest, highlighting the growing recognition that creating a more inclusive maritime industry is not simply a matter of equal representation, but a prerequisite for innovation, competitiveness and sustainable growth.
Through engaging panel discussions and an open exchange of views, participants explored the challenges women continue to face in maritime careers, the opportunities emerging from the sector’s ongoing transformation, and the changes needed to ensure that talent and professional potential are recognised regardless of gender.
New Opportunities, New Perspectives for Women in Maritime
One of the key messages emerging from the workshop was that the maritime sector is evolving, creating new professional opportunities and career pathways for women on an equal basis.
Technological innovation, digitalisation and changing industry requirements are reshaping traditional maritime professions and opening new areas in which women can contribute, excel and lead.
Speakers highlighted the valuable skills and perspectives women bring to maritime organisations, including strong organisational abilities, effective communication, collaboration and a comprehensive understanding of complex professional environments.
The discussions emphasised that recognising these capabilities should translate into tangible opportunities for professional development, career progression and greater participation in decision-making and leadership.
The Need for Cultural Change
A recurring theme throughout the workshop was that achieving meaningful gender equality requires more than increasing the number of women entering the maritime workforce.
It requires a fundamental shift in organisational culture, established perceptions and traditional attitudes that may continue to influence recruitment, professional development and leadership opportunities.
Participants stressed the importance of challenging stereotypes, addressing unconscious bias and fostering working environments in which women and men are evaluated according to their skills, qualifications, performance and potential.
A particularly powerful message was the need to move towards “gender blindness” in professional opportunities — a merit-based approach in which gender does not determine an individual’s prospects, while existing inequalities and structural barriers are actively addressed.
The ultimate goal is a maritime industry where equal opportunity becomes an established practice rather than an aspiration.
From Dialogue to Action: ATALANTA’s Contribution
Another central message was the need for more women to take active leadership roles across the maritime sector. The discussions highlighted that women should not simply be encouraged to participate in the industry, but also be empowered to influence decisions, shape strategies and assume positions of responsibility.
The workshop provided an important opportunity to connect the industry experience with the objectives of the ATALANTA project, which aims to advance gender equality and inclusion in the marine and maritime sectors through education, training, mentorship and innovative learning approaches.
The perspectives and insights shared during the event will contribute to the project’s ongoing work on developing recommendations for more inclusive maritime education and training, ensuring that its activities respond to the real needs and experiences of maritime professionals.
By bringing together representatives from the maritime industry and blue economy in general, academia and maritime education, ATALANTA continues to promote meaningful dialogue and collaboration towards a sector that values diversity, recognises talent and creates opportunities for everyone.
The strong interest in the ATALANTA Inclusivity Workshop and the valuable contributions of its distinguished speakers and participants reinforced a shared understanding: the future of maritime must be built on equal opportunities, inclusive leadership and a willingness to challenge established norms.
The message is clear: Women do not simply have a place in the maritime industry — they have the skills, ambition and potential to help lead its future.
The ATALANTA consortium warmly thanks all speakers, moderators, participants and contributors who helped make the workshop a success. Together, we can move towards a maritime sector where opportunities know no gender.
